The products from the various companies can be divided into two main catagories. Medical and non medical. For this document I will identify Medical as products relating to the stoma care.
Medical
Stoma Bags
Bags come in various types: one piece/two piece open/closed small/large flat/convex. Colours – black/white/skin & grey. Your shape will determine which is best but may change over time. Convex bags use a small belt to help keep them in place
Seals/ rings
Various types and sizes available from most suppliers. Aloe rings (good for the skin but not as sticky as others). Also available with manuka honey
Collar
Similar to rings help prevent leaks and useful for non protruding stoma
Extenders
Various sizes and shapes are used to help hold the bag in place. Also available with Aloe Vera or Manuka Honey for sensitive skin from some suppliers.
Sprays
Adhesive remover will help unstick the bag. Odour eliminator spray can help with the smell.
Skin Barrier
Skin barriers are available as sprays, wipes or protective sheets. The spray or wipe is applied before the bag or ring are placed on the skin and helps protect the skin. The barrier sheet/film is placed around the stoma and performs a similar function
Powder
Used to absorb moisture from broken skin around the stoma
Absorbent powder/ Gel
absorbagel® is a super absorbent stoma powder, contained in a sachet, which transforms pouch content into a discreet gel. Trio Pearls® Gelling and Odour Control Sachets help ostomates gain more control in managing liquid output from their stool
Paste
Used to fill or caulk uneven skin contours
Deodorant
Lubricating deodorant can be placed in the bag to help with the smell
Cloths/ wetwipes
Used to clrean around the stoma when changing the bag. Often provided by the chemist for free but may also be purchased in packs of 100 ask for Patient dry wipes. Wetwipes are available in most supermarkets ( often called water wipes)
Disposable Bags
Used to contain the used stoma bag and accessories prior to disposal. Often available for free from your chemist but you could also use nappy bage of dog poo bags.
Heylo
Heylo is a leak detection system from Coloplast for people with an ileostomy, or colostomy with liquid or mushy output. It is not currently available in Ireland
